Dr Paul Grant return to South Africa

It has been 5 years since I was last here - time has flown without even realising!

This time I was returning with the international volunteer network, a charity that specializes in short periods of volunteering for individuals in both South Africa and South America. Given that I had been to KwaZulu Natal before I thought that it would be a good opportunity to spend some time back in the same area as last time, catch up with Diabetes Durban, the Hillcrest AIDS centre and work on other projects.

The background training and development necessary for my placement began in October and I am glad that I was so well prepared by Karen Patten and co. (especially with the language skills).
My motivations for fundraising and volunteering were the opportunity to provide and maintain my caring skills, for personal growth and to help others less fortunate. I was keen to revisit this area as I had been here previously in 2013.

I was based at the Ikhethelo Children's Village, approximately 1 hour north of Durban. This is an orphanage for children who have lost family members to HIV and AIDS. It is shocking how this disease has decimated the social fabric of KwaZulu Natal. There are many who have been left orphaned and it was an honour to live and work amongst the committed volunteers and workers at Ikhethelo.

Ikhethelo is not far from the town of Hillcrest off the N3 highway, here they have a palliative care unit called the Hillcrest AIDS centre which does some amazing work supporting those who are terminally unwell from AIDS related illnesses. I went to see their work and was deeply impressed by the hard work and commitment of the team there.

The time volunteering in this setting helped to satisfy my obligation to help and show empathy for others. I remain concerned about the community and would like to go back again in the future to this part of the world.  It was a privilege to be a resident volunteer at ICV and to be treated as an part of this family village.
