In the countryside north of Hillcrest...
The Children’s Village was
set up in 2002 in the Valley of a Thousand Hills, 1 hour north of Durban, South
Africa. Currently they house 50 vulnerable children, ranging from 18 months to
18 years of age – all of whom who have lost one or both of their parents to the
HIV/AIDS pandemic.
Personal projects:

To
support the life of the village, house mothers and contribute to the care,
education and development of the children

To
revisit the Hillcrest AIDS centre
-
To help
with clear up of The White House community care centre at IKwaNyusa.
- To street medicine in action in downtown Durban
The children, residential
staff and volunteers all live on a secure 12 acre campus near the communities
of Botha’s Hill, KwaNyusa and Embo – about 35 miles north of Durban. Meeting the
team was great; everyone was so welcoming and had a lively and pleasant
attitude. Each child lives in a cottage with 8 other children and a housemother,
where they operate as a family unit. The team are responsible for all areas of
their growth and nurture. Graham who is the director acts as their legal
guardian.
ICV acts as a distribution centre for donations
of clothing, food and other resources from multiple places as they reach out to
help the poor where they can.
It
was a privilege to work in KwaZulu Natal at ICV as the strength and
vulnerability and courage of the kids have made me look at my life and values.
This
is against the background of the AIDS pandemic which has decimated the social
fabric of the province and killed hundreds of thousands of people and orphaned
even more.

I am indeed very happy for my life; My name is Vargas Cynthia I never thought that I will live on earth before the year runs out.
